Concert tickets math

posted: May 18, 2003 7:36:20 PM

I just bought two tickets each to the upcoming Yo La Tengo and Blonde Redhead shows in June at The Fillmore. I got them at The Fillmore box office (oh, and coincidentally saw the guys from Metallica arriving for their show tonight).

I mention all of this to note for my reader(s) that I saved a total of about $40 vs if I had bought the tickets from Ticketmaster. Yes, having that degree in math and having a dad who is an accountant does come in handy some times--I actually figured out in my head that Ticketmaster's $40 in "processing" or whatever charges is more than the $0 I would pay by going to the box office.

To be fair, even on the web, ticket brokers do need to charge some money for processing and handling. Like Virtuous Tickets charges $1 a ticket (i.e., $1, NOT $10). That's a decent processing charge. If you have a band or a club or need to sell tickets, try to use Virtuous as your broker. IMHO, they are doing things right.
