PlaNetwork conference, danah Boyd's faceted identity thesis

posted: Jun 8, 2003 7:31:00 PM

Blogging the PlaNetwork conference in San Francisco.

danah Boyd's faceted identity thesis, which she linked to from her zephoria blog, looks very cool. I am going to read it.

Faceted classification was one of the inspirations of the iCite net, and the potential for iCites to express faceted classification is also true of identity iCites. In other words, identity in the iCite net is assumed to be multi-faceted. I think something like this is also danah's thesis.

(note: I edited this a few hours after writing, to correct the spelling and capitalization of danah's name, in response to her comment. Sorry for the buggy citation, danah!)

Jay - thank you so much for the link and i'm so glad to hear that you're thinking about and incorporating faceted identity into the development of iCite net! I look forward to the prototype! Please do let me know when it is available. Also, for the record, my name is actually danah boyd (Dana Boyd is a rad molecular geneticist from Harvard). The 'h' is actually there to balance out the 'd' which is why my name also doesn't have capital letters. It's all a bit silly, but i do happen to be proud of my 'h'. Tehe!

title: Social networks facets

In this same post, danah discusses ideas about whether people have one social network or many, and she puts forth the concept that people have (or like to have) a single social network that they can facet as they see fit.
