RSS Schedulin' your idea

posted: Jul 6, 2003 10:07:21 PM

I guess one new ache introduced with the RSS/N/Echo name shift is that RSS will no longer be the term that means website syndication. RSS is so much more convenient to use than "syndication", and of course you can't just say "summary" and have people know what you are talking about either.

Anyway, until further revelations of cosmic events have been turned into widely used scriptures, er, um, specs, I will return to using the term RSS to mean anything I want it to mean.

What this post is actually about, however, is the use of RSS for scheduling and calendar sharing. And, when I say about, I just mean that I thought about this idea and I wanted to know what everyone else has thought about it, so I can go back to zoning out in front of the TV.

OK, well, one thing to say actually: schedules are basically lists. They are maybe lists of tasks lined up against a list of dates and/or times. Multiple schedules are multiple lists. iCites are ways of creating and sharing lists . . .

But, really, has anyone already thought about using RSS for publishing and subscribing to schedules. I guess this would mean that there is an RSS aggregator that displays information differently—maybe the timestamp of the RSS item is the timestamp of the event in the schedule, and the RSS aggregator display looks like a PIM calendar . . .

OK, I know this must be your idea and that you can tell me all about this. Leave me a comment or trackback, and give me the scoop, set me straight, open my eyes, deliver my pizza, etc.—that's me over there, blended with the couch, in front of the TV. . .

Hi Jay, There's been a fair bit of work relating to scheduling done by the RDF calendar folks. I'm not sure whether putting this stuff into feeds has been looked into (the problems of interop between existing schedule tools seems to take up a lot of time). But there is a 'hybrid' RDF vocabulary for expressing this stuff, so presumably the scheduling stuff could be done almost immediately in an RSS 1.0 feed. You're right though - feeding this stuff couldd be dead useful. http://ilrt.org/discovery/2001/04/calendar/ http://esw.w3.org/topic/RdfCalendar

title: Upcoming.org events site and RSS calendaring

This RSS events feed reminded everyone of how neat it might be to create and get calendar notifications via RSS, which I mentioned in July in my RSS Schedulin' your idea post.
