Yahoo messenger protocol change breaks Jabber-Yahoo transport

posted: Sep 26, 2003 1:45:01 PM

Yahoo has been announcing for a couple weeks that they were upgrading their Y! messenger transport this week. Sometime between yesterday and today, the new transport went into effect and now all non-Y! clients (Jabber-Yahoo transport, and also Trillium, Gaim, etc.) can not connect to Y!

So, if like me, you use Jabber and also use it to connect to Y!, this is why you can't connect to Y! today. However, the Jabber folks are already working on changes to the Jabber-Yahoo transport to try to reconnect with Y!

I guess I will put some time in today asking my friends on Y! to switch to another IM service that knows how to play nice with Jabber. And, if you want to IM-me today, please use one of my non-Y! addresses (listed on this page).

Yahoo is playing nice. They didn't make a change to block other clients. They did an upgrade that broke them but have announced they'd work with the 3rd parties to get the clients working again. Trillian beta is already there.
