Content: process over product

posted: Oct 2, 2003 9:52:35 PM

I have been busy today, and am visiting with family for a few days starting tomorrow and have to get ready. So, for a change, I will be brief here!

I just read Tim Oren's recent post, Music Futurism: Stardom, Process as Product, and New Business Models, which features a dialog between Tim, Kevin Kelly and Kevin Laws. I think it is really interesting, and highly recommend it.

With my title, I hope to suggest my assumption that many forms of "content" will be valued in the context of a process (generally, a relationship) rather than as a commodity-thing called "content". I am certainly imagining releasing my own music with this kind of assumption.

Side note: Lisa Rein, who has been releasing her music on the web under Creative Commons license, is playing in concert in San Francisco on December 13th—here is Lisa's announcement. This show will be just a few blocks from my house, and I plan to go. Hope to see you there!
