Monolith, exploring the boundaries of digital information

posted: Jun 9, 2004 3:26:02 PM

Monolith is fascinating—check it out ASAP (via BoingBoing). Monolith, which has been created by Jason Rohrer, is described as:

. . . a simple tool that takes two arbitrary binary files . . . and "munges" them together to produce a Mono binary file (with a .mono extension). . .

Monolith can be used for exploring the boundaries of digital copyright, and the rest of this website is devoted to such an exploration. The core questions: What happens when we use Monolith to munge copyrighted files? What is the copyright status of the resulting .mono file? These questions are considered in depth below.

It is a very interesting exploration. Great consideration of the difference between digital and analog information, and what digital bits mean in relation to analog information! Really, check it out ASAP.

(Reminder to self: I should also blog about this on Wrong Notes, because it is relevant to digital copyright.)

title: World is music, but the brain figures itself

the project description is a fascinating look at the relationship between music and sound recording and the digital representation of sound and sound files and what gets copyrighted
