news and thoughts on and around the development
of the iCite net

Tim Bray posted yesterday about RDF still not being in common use. I remember not too long ago asking myself: "have I missed a whole RDF revolution", because it seemed like so much was being said about RDF yet I had never had occasion to use it.
So, I recommend to anyone who has heard about RDF and wants to know more, to at least read the beginning of Tim's post which has a little history of RDF and some good comments along the lines of "even though I helped create RDF and think it is a good thing, I still don't use it", which should make you feel better.
Tim goes on in this piece to talk about the problems with RDF/XML syntax and usage, and introduces his proposed RPV syntax, which he makes look like a vast improvement over the RDF/XML example he starts with.
But, Sjoerd Visscher posts a counter-argument for RDF/XML in RPV, Tim Bray's thought experiment, and Ian Davis makes excellent points in a similar vein in RPV Syntax is Ugly.
I also saw that Danny Ayers mentioned in 't want to)RDF.net that he emailed his grumbles about Tim's piece to Tim. Danny is someone who has been contributing great comments to the ThreadsML discussion that I am also participating in right now.
As usual, I mention all this because RDF is relevant to iCites. RDF is one of the possible data storage formats for iCites, and many iCite gateways may use RDF/XML, such as FOAF and RSS 1.0.
I think that iCites, being representative of semantic relationships with one and other, will have interesting uses for building ontologies and perhaps other less formal types of knowledge maps. Danny Ayer's Ideagraph is a totally neat example of an application that uses RDF for knowledge mapping. I definitely see that there might be interesting things that could come from connecting Ideagraph to iCites.

Hi Jay, thanks for the kind words and comments. I'm hard at work tying to get Ideagraph ready for a more useful release sometime in the next few weeks, I'll let you know - I'll keep an eye on your iCities blog meantime.
