Ideas for IM-with-blog, for blojsim

posted: Jun 5, 2003 12:59:00 AM

I am almost done with the next round of changes to this site and blog. I should have all the new stuff up tomorrow.

I had these comments below sitting on my "drawing board" and thought I would post them rather than let them stagnate.

Mark Lussier announced that the new version of blojsim, the IM-to-blog tool is in the works (currently only for blojsom). blojsim is growing beyond being just for blojsom—it will be blog agnostic.

I have some more ideas for blojsim and using IM-with-blog, which I am summarizing here:

In general, use IM to register presence with blog-IM-bot. This is basically along the lines of rss-im.

IM-with-blog feature ideas:

  • subscribe to be messaged when the blog updates (RSS-like)
  • list the last x entries
  • list the blog categories. List the last x entries from category y
  • grab full text for entry z
  • grab comments for entry z
  • post a comment to entry z
  • grab trackbacks for entry z
  • replace (edit) entry z with new text

These features may be neat for people, but could be interesting for applications that poll multiple blogs and aggregate them!

Also, after I upload the upgraded features / design for this blog, I will probably post more about the new blojsom flavor I created for the blog archives. Along these lines I was thinking of an "edit" flavor and edit plugin for browser based creation / editing of blog entries.

These are all cool ideas, and I'm struck again by the the need for a way to easily incorporate new functionality as a bot (which all of these sound like to me -- at least I envision each of the functions being called in "command-line" fashion). So it would be nice to tie all of these commands and any other commands into a neat package that was extensible. I wrote a (very) simple "framework" last year to provide this for IBM's Sametime IM server, but it could easily be reworked to be compatible with Jabber / AIM, etc. Anyway, if something like this sounds beneficial, you can check it out at imshell.sf.net. I haven't worked on it in a few months, so it's really just a prototype... -Ray
