Good article from Nick Usborne, Optimize Your Home Page for New Visitors (via ia/). I am big fan of Nick's book, Net Words: Creating High-Impact Online Copy.
The one thing about this article that I wonder about is: a well-connected website usually has more people coming in via pages other than the home page (i.e., via inbound links and search engine traffic). I think the concepts in the article might need to be checked (for any particular site) against the context of who exactly uses a home page and why / how (from where) they go there.
