RSS in ten words or less

posted: Apr 3, 2004 2:08:33 PM

So, there are about 1,000 of these < 10 word descriptions floating out there now, so one more probably won't even be noticed:

Email, but you only get messages your computer asks for

Nice quick statement, but (like so many aspects of the Internet) extremely unsatisfying if one has an inkling of how things actually work. Yes, your computer asks for RSS content (despite the fact that it's usually touted as though the selected content miraculously flows to your machine unaided...). However, your computer asks (via POP or IMAP) for email as well - absent some kind of filtering, you just don't get to restrict delivery on the basis of sender. (And yes, email servers are a different beast...)

Thanks for the comment, I see your point.

Where I was coming from: I think RSS is a lot like email in some fundamental ways, so I just whipped up those ten words with that in mind—especially because none of the other ten-word definitions (at least that I had seen) even mentioned email.

Also, email is a specific and common application of the Internet, so "email" is one word that goes a long way in a ten word definition ;-)
