Portal toolkit, open source digital library application

posted: Jun 24, 2003 5:53:41 PM

I just came across something interesting called the Scout Portal Toolkit, which was mentioned in this post on ia/. Here is the blurb from the SPT site:

The Scout Portal Toolkit (SPT) allows groups or organizations that have a collection of knowledge or resources they want to share via the World Wide Web to put that collection online without making a big investment in technical resources or expertise.

The ia/ post highlights these features:

configurable metadata tool with a field set based on Dublin Core; vocabulary control; fielded searching (in advanced search); user annotation; email alerting and the ability save search strategies; and a recommender system.

If you are interested in portals, metadata, or digital library cataloging, definitely check out the demo. The software uses PHP / MySQL.

I will definitely check this out more. It looks like it is along the lines of some of the systems I have developed and suggests a somewhat more centralized and more library-specific application of what one layer of the iCite net is about. I will have to add this to my related projects links page too.
