Continuing on my innocuous podCasting posts (here and here), I thought I would add another bit of bytes (which could mean $$ 4 U - read on!!!).
One thing really cromaggy about podCasting is that it pulls (for example) blog posts back out of hypertext and into linear audio that must be "read" from start to finish. People who listen to audio blog posts are in a somewhat more captive situation than those reading a web page with links (sort of e.g., listen to this audioblogging manifesto).
So, in other words, interruption advertising can get old-fashioned ad value (i.e., "eyeballs") out of podCasts in a way it can not out of web pages (i.e., cluetrain). It's a lot harder for a person listening to audio to skip an ad. So, I see $$ in the future of someone who starts a podVertising business.
The model is probably simple: host your mp3 podCasts on our server, we'll add a thirty-second audio ad spot at the start. You'll get free hosting and possibly some $$, and we'll make money selling the ad space in your posts.
Similarly, I foresee podSpamming. Some crack that will hijack podCast mp3s and add ads to them could be lucrative. Especially if people are letting their RSS feeds download lots of audio that they'll listen to with a portable mp3 player: that's a captive audience waiting to be interrupted with the soothing sounds of spam!
